Bleach Gotei 13 Guide
The Gotei 13 is the name given to the 13 Divisions of the Shinigami in Soul
Society. Anyone classified as a Shinigami is put into 1 of the 13 Divisions,
whether they are a Captain or Vice-Captain, hold a Seat, or are just a member,
they are still an important part of the Division.
Each Division of the Gotei 13 has a Captain and a Vice Captain, they are
generally the strongest of the whole Division. To become a Captain, a Shinigami
must first have achieved Ban-Kai as one of the prerequisites. The Captain and
Vice Captain usually travel together and get along well.
A Shinigami cannot be seen in the human world, they leave Soul Society when
they are going on missions to balance the Spirits in the World. Those that can
see Ghosts can generally not see Shinigami, but there are exceptions and it is a
very rare gift.
Each Shinigami wears black robes with white trimming and a white cloth belt.
On special occasions they wear a arm band to signify their rank in their
specific Division. The Captain of a Division wears a White Robe with the Number
of their Division in Kanji on the back.
| 1st Division Captain: Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryuusai |

Not much is known about the first division captain He is basically
the general of the Gotei 13 and captain of the 1st Division. He is
regarded as the Authoritarian figure in Soul Society having lived for so
long and having great respect for his knowledge and power alike. In
fact, he is so powerful that the 8th Division Vice Captain, Nanao Ise,
fell to to her knees and was immobilize just by Yamamoto's spiritual
pressure. His zanpakutou is the oldest and most powerful Zanpakutou and
has the greatest attack power in Soul Society |
| 2nd Division Captain: Soi Fong |

Soi Fong is the second division captain. She became captain when the
former 2nd Division captain Shihouin Yoruichi mysteriously left.
Throughout her life Soi Fong was brought up into a low noble class
family dedicated to serve Shihouin Yoruichi and the 2nd Division.
Although she was a girl and resented by some in the military she worked
hard and worked her way up to Executive Militia Commanders Personal
Guard Unit where she was treated in a casual manner by Shihouin Yoruichi
whom she treated her as a equal. This made Soi fong often blush, but
Yoruichi didn’t mind as long as Soi Fong at least called her Yoruichi or
Yoruichi-Sama as Soi Fong called her. Her first appearance was during
the execution of Kuchiki Rukia where she planned two kill one of the
13th Division shinigamis for betraying the Gotei 13. She was then
stopped by none other than Shihouin Yoruichi. Soi Fong attacked her with
the armed military forces where they were defeated. She released her
Shikai Suzumebachi which was used to momentarily seduce Yoruichi by
putting a butterfly imprint everywhere she struck. She was defeated when
she used a skill known as flash cry which was a technique combined with
fighting and Shinigami powers. Yoruichi who was already a master of
flash cry stopped the battle. |
| 3rd Division Captain: Ichimaru Gin |

The 3rd Division Captain Ichimaru Gin has has never been seen
without a smile in the anime. Behind that smile though, is an evil man.
Ichimaru Gin is a name feared throughout the Soul Society, for example,
when the White Gate Guardian, Jidanbou, saw him, his whole body quivered
in fear at just the sight of this Captain. His soul cutter's name is "Shinsou",
and once awakened by its Ichimaru, can extend to great distances and
still push with amazing force and speed just like its user. His goal was
revealed to us when he, Aizen and Tousen betrayed the Soul Society after
stealing the crumbling treasure inside Rukia’s soul to attain the powers
of a Hollow. |
| 4th Division Captain: Unohana Retsu |

The 4th Division Captain Unohana is a soft-spoken, caring woman..
She is very polite and uses respects everyone, even those below her.
Unohana never seems to show panic or distress even in times of distress.
She kept calm when Soul Society was under attack and healed everyone,
even including Renji who betrayed Soul Scoiety by picking a fight with
Byakuya. Despire her soft and caring nature, it seems that she is a very
powerful Captain as officers from the 11th division seem to be afraid of
Unohana. |
| 5th Division Captain: Aizen Sousuke |

The 5th squad Captain Aizen Sousuke, seems like a smart and
soft-spoken man and appears to be very kind to his subordinates. In
reality, however, he does not care for them at all. According to Aizen
himself, he is not bound by morals and will therefore stop at nothing to
achieve his goals. In addition to that, he manipulates many, including
his enemies, into helping him achieve these goals. Aizen is extremely
adept at combat. While it is not clear, it's implied that he has reached
the limit of his Shinigami power in all four forms of Shinigami combat:
swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, footwork and demon arts. It is
implied that since he can't advance any further as far as Shinigami
powers are concerned. He can effortlessly defeat several captain-level
opponents at once, and is one of the strongest characters in the series.
His goal is to continue his growth by attaining the powers of a
Hollow. |
| 6th Division Captain: Kuchiki Byakuya |

The 6th Divison Kuchiki Byakuya is the silent and powerful captain.
He is the 28th head of the noble Kuchiki clan, one of the four noble
families in Soul Society. As such, Byakuya acts in an aristocratic
manner - always being serene and apathetic about other people. Byakuya
is possibly the strongest person in his clan's history. He wears the
standard captain uniform along with a white headpiece called a Kenseikan
(symbolizing his noble rank as the head of the Kuchiki family) and a
white scarf.
He tends to carry out an air of authority and arrogance
which matches his demeanor. As a noble descendent he carries out his
strict duties under any circumstances. After fighting and being defeated
by Ichigo,
Byakuya explained to Rukia that he made two promises that he should not
have made. He first made a promise to his parents that he would follow
the rules no matter what the circumstances he ended up breaking that and
married a commoner instead of a person of nobility like he was supposed
to. The second promise was to his wife Hisana who requested Byakuya find
her sister and protect her. He was breaking that promise by having her
executed, but he realized he should keep the promise to the wife he
loved and ended up keeping it because he risked his own life and took a
blow fired by Ichimaru Gin to save Rukia. |
| 7th Division Captain: Komamura Sajin |

Komamura is very large in size, towering over all of the other
captains. He seems to be a human with a fox's head. Komamura was
initially very self-conscious of his appetence and tried to hide his
spiritual energy, and face so that people would not notice him. He is
friends with 9th Division Captain Tousen because Tousen's view on life
was similar to his - that life should be followed in accordance to
justice.
Later on he fought with Captain Aizen during the invasion of Soul
Society and lost easily. When he saw his friend, Tousen, on Captain
Aizen's side he felt angry, and couldn't understand why Tousen would
side with Aizen. Afterwards he had gained the confidence to remove the
helmet he wore to cover his face with a goal of helping Tousen see that
Aizen's ways are wrong and that he must see what evil Aizen is really up
to. |
| 8th Division Captain: Kyouraku Shunsui |

8th Division Captain Kyouraku Shunsui is known to be a laid back
Captain that does not enjoy violence and will always try to talk his way
out of a fight. He does not wish to insult opponents by not fighting,
he merely just rather avoid a fight. As a captain, he is an extremely
powerful fighter with numerous abilities. As he trained under General
Yamamoto himself, it is likely that Kyouraku is somewhat on the stronger
side as far as captains go.
He wears a straw hat and a gaudy pink coat over his captain's uniform.
He likes to chase after women and often flirts with his vice-captain,
calling her "my Nanao-chan". He is fond of drinking sake and is close
friends with 13th Division Captain, Jushiro Ukitake (who was also
trained under General Yamamoto). |
| 9th Division Captain: Tousen Kaname |

The 9th Division Captain Tousen Kaname was first thought to dislike
fighting and violence, but later on in the betrayal of Aizen, he follows
Captain Aizen and Captain Gin for strength thinking this is justice that
is good for everyone. His friendship with 7th Division Captain Komamura
was torn apart because of this. He sees Justice as a part of destiny and
believed that the path of bloodshed and destruction in the road to
Justice when he betrayed the Gotei 13. |
| 10th Division Captain: Hitsugaya Toushiro |

Hitsugaya Toushiro is the youngest in person to have become a
captain in Soul Society. He is called a "boy genius" by many. Hitsugaya
is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his free-spirited vice
captain, Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their philosophical differences,
they seem to be very close. He is, however, easily annoyed when anyone's
refers to him by anything other than his title, Captain Hitsugaya. His
long time friend, Hinamori has gotten away with "Hitsugaya-kun", and
both she and Captain Ukitake have occasionally called him "Whitey-chan"
(referring to his hair). He is also overly protective of Hinamori,
although she was once like an older sister to him.
During his fight with Ichimaru Gin, Ichimaru remarks that Hitsugaya is
the embodiment of the heavenly guardian that is born into Soul Society
every few centuries. This may explain his extra-ordinarily rapid growth
and why he is a respected captain despite his age. Alternately, Gin may
have been speaking sarcastically, saying that Hitsugaya did not seem to
live up to his title as he was easily defeated despite using his Bankai. |
| 11th Division Captain: Zaraki Kenpachi |

11th Division Captain Zaraki Kenpachi is the most feared and
powerful of the Gotei 13. Just his spirit force can bring people to
their knees in pain. In fact, he wears a special eye patch, which is
actually an energy-sucking creature to contain his immense spiritual
pressure. Both of these are meant to give enemies an advantage so that
he can have even fights with weaker opponents. He enjoys a good fight
more than anything and weakens himself in an effort to make the fight
last longer. Zaraki lives to fight, and tries to drag out each fight as
long as possible and make it as even as possible. He claims that injury
and death are nothing but the price one pays for a good fight. |
| 12th Division Captain: Kurotsuchi Mayuri |

12th Division Captain Kurotshuchi Mayuri is one of the strangest
captains in the Gotei 13. He looks and acts quite different than the
other Shinigami. He is the current head of the demon craft development
bureaucracy and the President of the research institute of technology.
Along with that he is one of the evilest and cruelest captains in the
Gotei 13. He sacrificed his own men to attempt killing Inoue and Ishida.
Ishida fought him at which he was about to lose, but by breaking open
his power glove, he unleashed an onslaught of power that tore away half
of Mayuri’s body. He however escaped by materializing into a liquid form
which seeped away in the cracks on the walls. He happens to be the one
who ordered the destruction of all Quincys. His creations were Zaraki’s
eye patch, and his Vice Captain Nemu, who he often beats, is his
creation (but is referred to as his daughter). Although he may be evil he
doesn’t interfere with things that don’t concern him such as Aizen’s
betrayal. He is more concerned, and actually obsessed, with conducting
experiments and gathering data. |
| 13th Division Captain: Ukitake Juushiro |

Ukitake is a very powerful Shinimagi, however, he suffers from an
illness and can only fight for short periods of time. He often left the
daily operations of the 13th Division to Shiba Kaien, when Kaien was
alive. He is honest, loyal and believes in his personal sense of
justice. This is why he is respected by many, especially by his
subordinates. These qualities date back to his days at the Shinigami
academy, where he was always the center of attention. He is considered
honorable and trustworthy by many, such that former second division
captain, Shihouin Yoruichi, leaves Kuchiki Rukia, Hanataro Yamada and
Shiba Ganju behind when she rescues Ichigo from Byakuya, knowing that
Ukitake would not let any harm come to the three.
Like Kaien, Ukitake does not give up when he believes something is wrong
and will break the rules if he must. He is close friends with 8th
Division Captain Kyouraku, since his youth, and was trained under
General Yamamato just like Kyouraku. |
| 1st Division Vice Captain: Sasakibe Choujirou |

Nothing is really known about 1st Division vice captain, Sasakibe
Choujirou. We was only seen when Ichigo came to save Rukia during her
execution. He released his Zapakutou, but was defeated by Ichigo even
before he could do anything. He also fought against the Bounto in the
anime and was defeated easily than as well. |
| 2nd Division Vice Captain: Ohmaeda Marechiyo |

Not much is known about 2nd Division Vice Captain, Ohmaeda Marechiyo.
He came from a rich family, and is basically portrayed as a loud mouth
who likes to eat. He is also been been several times picking his nose.
He was easily defeated by the Bounto in the anime version of Bleach. |
| 3rd Division Vice Captain: Kira Izuru |

Kira is a caring friend and loyal subordinate. He is friends with
Hinamori Momo and Abarai Renji. They have known each other since their
days in the Shinigami Institute. Despite this friendship, he fought with
Hinamori to defend his captain when she believed that the 3rd Division
Captain was responsible for the death of her captain. Afterwards, Kira
somewhat regrets fighting with her and calls himself a monster for
raising his sword against Hinamori. The decision to side with his friend
or captain drove him close to insanity. |
| 4th Division Vice Captain: Kotetsu Isane |
 |
4th Division Captain Kotetsu Isane seems to be good at performing
demon arts (kidou) since she was able to track and inform all seated
Shinigami and as well as Ichigo and his team about the location of
Captain Aizen when she and her captain had learned about Aizen being
against Soul Society. Isane is is generally quiet and observant and is
very loyal to her captain as she looks at her as a role model. |
| 5th Division Vice Captain: Hinamori Momo |

Hinamori may not seem like a strong Shinigami, but she actually a
master of the demon arts. She really liked 5th Division captain Aizen
Sousuke a lot and looked up to him as a father figure. She cried when
she saw Captain Aizen's body pinned to the wall, making him seem dead.
In a letter from Aizen that was given to her, he wrote that 3rth
Division Captain Ichimaru Gin and him had some tense altercations. She
wanted to kill Gin and fought with 3rd Division Vice Captain Kira to
avenge Aizen. She was unable to and was beaten by Kira. Her friend and
10th division Captain Hitsuguya eventually learned that Aizen was alive
and was up to evil things. He told Hinamori, but she did not believe
him, and even attacked him, especially because she was confused.
Eventually, she found out that Aizen was still alive and was extremely
happy to see him and refused to believe that Aizen was actually evil.
When she hugged Aizen she was stabbed by him and Aizen thanked her for
being so loyal to him since it made carrying out his plot much easier. |
| 6th Division Vice Captain: Abarai Renji |
 |
The 6th Division vice Captain, Abarai Renji is a cocky individual
with a lot of pride and is a serious and determined to win all fights.
When he looses though, he feels very depressed and thinks of how he
could have win. In a sense, his personality sort of relates to Dragon
Ball Z's Vegeta. He even ends up respecting Ichigo after seeing his
power the same way Vegeta did when he saw Goku's power. Unlike Vegeta though, Renji has a close friend in Kuchiki Rukia. The
two have known each another since their childhood. He has dropped hints
of even loving her. They even entered the Shinigami Academy together.
Although Rukia was adopted by the Kuchiki family and ended up graduating
before him, he still had feelings for her. When he heard of Rukia's
execution he was not a happy man and was ready to fight with his
Captain, Kuchiki Byakuya to save her life. |
| 7th Division Vice Captain: Iba Tetsuzaemon |
 |
7th Division Vice Captain Iba Tetsuzaemo was once a former 11th
Division member who went off to become a Vice Captain. Although Komamura
recently showed his true face as a giant fox, Iba has always been very
loyal to Komamura and still is, however he has been visiting the 11th
Division’s HQ to give his Captain some time alone. Soon before Tousen
betrayed Komamura, Zaraki Kenpachi battled Tousen and Komamura while
Ikkaku fought Iba and Yumichika fought Hisagi. Iba and Ikkaku start
sharing a bottle sake when Iba mentions that feels Byakuya fighting with
someone he doesn't know. Ikakku mentions that's Ichigo and realizes
their out of sake. A battle of rock, paper, scissors ensues where they
pull out their Shikai form to battle and the loser has to fetch another
bottle of sake. |
| 8th Division Vice Captain: Ise Nanao |

The 8th Division Vice Captain Ise Nana is seems to be a serious
teacher-type person. The 8th Division Captain, Kyouraku Shunsui often
teases her, calling her Nanao-Chan and saying that she shouldn’t fight
because she would get hurt. She often gets irritated by Kyouraku
flirting with her and ends up hitting him. Still, she is loyal to him
and usually takes care of the work while Kyouraku is seen laying around
resting and wasting his time. Although we have never seen her fight, she
asks if she can kill Chad when she sees that he is still alive after his
fight with Kyouraku. Kyouraku says no and tells her to bring the 4th
squad to heal Chad. She seems hesitant, but follows the Captains orders. |
| 9th Division Vice Captain: Hisagi Shuuhei |
 |
Not much is known about 9th Division captain Hisagi Shuuhei. He
looks similar to Ichigo and Kaien, but with a more punk-like
appearance. Despite that, he is a calm and helpful person who tends to
avoid violence if possible. He was loyal to the 9th Division Captain
Tousen Kaname until he learned that Tousen was associated with 5th
Divisions Captain Aizen's plans. Him and the Captain of the 7th Division
want to show Tousen that Aizen's ways are wrong and that he must see
what evil Aizen is really up to. |
| 10th Division Vice Captain: Matsumoto Rangiku |
 |
10th Division Vice Captain Matsumoto Rangiku is an attractive woman.
She may strike many males as one of the better looking females mainly
due to her cleavage. Rangiku tends to be a slacker who doesn't like
paperwork. She often tries to run away when she hears of paperwork and
likes to drink a lot. She has an easy-going personality is in sharp and
it mostly seems that she likes to enjoy life. She seems relatively close
to the 10th Division Captain, Hitsugaya Toushiro. She has proven time
and time again that she is loyal to him. At times Rangiku may seem
self-centered, but she is actually quite sensitive towards the other
peoples feelings, especially when they are feeling down.
When Rangiku was a child, 3rd Division Captain Ichimaru Gin saved her
from starvation and the two became friends. Even after Gin's betrayal to
Soul Society, it was seen that Gin was still a friend to Rangiku as he
did not fight her when she stopped his blade from killing 5th division
vice captain Hinamori. |
| 11th Division Vice Captain: Kusajishi Yachiru |

11th Division Vice Captain Kusajishi Yachiru seems to be a cute and
adorable little girl. She is usually always seen on 11th Division
Captain Zaraki Kenpachi's back (whom she calls Ken-chan). Her funny and
sweet attitude brings the kindness out of Zaraki, making him even seem
playful at times even though he lives to fight.
Although she carries a Zanpakutou, she has never used it before since
as Zaraki usually fights. Despite her harmless appearance, it should be
noted that Yachiru is the vice captain of the combat division within
Soul Society meaning that she is quite powerful. This is reflected when
she gets into more serious moments and reveals her immense spiritual
energy and speed as well as the ability to resist the effects of
Zaraki's immense spiritual energy. All in all though, whenever Yachiru
appears, it seems to lighten the mood and add a little comic relief to
even tense moments in Bleach. |
| 12th Division Vice Captain: Kurotsuchi Nemu |

12th Divison Vice Captain Kurotsuchi Nemu is actually one of 12th
Division Captain Mayuri’s creations and is referred to him as her
daughter. Mayuri does not seem to care about her much, and often beats
her if she has not performed a task to his satisfaction, however, is
still very loyal to Mayuri and often expresses her worries about him. |
| 13th Division Vice Captain: Shiba Kaien |
 |
Shiba Kaien served as vice captain of the Thirteenth Division under
Ukitake Jyuushiro. When he was alive he often took over the duties of
the captain because the 13th Division captain, Ukitake, had an illness.
Kaien looks almost the same as Ichigo except he has black hair while
Ichigo has orange hair. He treated his subordinates equally and
respected them all. He was the first person that made Rukia feel good.
He was like a father/older brother figure to her. His kind and funny
personality made Rukia trust him more than anyone other than Renji.
Kaien was also the oldest son of the Shiba family, which was one of
the main noble families, along with the Shihouin and Kuchiki families,
and the older brother of Kukaku and Ganju Shiba. He was also married to
another Shinigami, the 3rd Seat of his division, Miyako.
One day his wife was a mission and was killed with her body being
taken over by the hollow that killed her. Kaien was furious and wanted
to fight this Hollow and kill it himself. He went after it and fought a
fierce battle. His Zanpakuto was destroyed by the Hollow, but he kept on
fighting. Ukitake and Rukia were watching the fight, but did not
intervene. Kaien requested that he was the only one who was going to
fight the hollow. Rukia wanted to help him really bad, but Ukitake
stopped her saying that even if she saves his life, she would have
killed his pride, and that's his pride is worth much more than his life.
Forced to accept the truth, Rukia watched the fight and saw Kaien's body
being taken over by the Hollow. In the end the Hollow, in Kaien's body,
charged at Rukia and in a panic, she killed him. Just after Rukia had
hit him and a few seconds before Kaien had died, he thanked Rukia for
her help. |
